stunted growth permanent?

KoreaAF_Guy Oct 21, 2007 06:17 PM

hello, i was just wondering if stunted growth is permanent, while i was stationed in korea i "adopted" 2 gold thread turtles who were not so very well takin care of. the turtles were at least 3 years old, and only about the size of a credit card, due to there 5 gallon enclosure, with no filter. i cant really blame the people who had em cause they were givin to them, and our dorm rooms were tiny, and we werent aloud to have large fish tanks, they tried the best they could. so, i kinda smuggled em back with me to the states, illegal yes, but i couldnt overcome my moral beliefs. i now have them in a 40 gallon wide, all spruced up and nice. just wondering if they will forever be the size of a credit card, or if they might grow some now that they have room to stretch out. i must say though, these guys are little troopers, theyve been through a lot.

I'm not an expert by any means but I have heard/been told that it is not permanent and as long as they are properly cared for now, they should grow and even be able to reproduce.

Good luck,

If the shells are otherwise normal in shape, they can resume growth and develop a typical shell contour. If they have defomities due to dietary deficiencies, these will remain and cause abnormal shell shapes. Sometines, however, slow-developing turles just remain small - it is not entirely predictable.
