One of my students has a "gray tree frog" that they have raised from a tadpole and he would like suggestions on how to hibernate his frogs or if he really needs to hibernate them in order for them to remain healthy and happy.

No it will do well with no hibernation at all.
If he wants to hibernate it all you need is few inches of soil at the bottom of the tank for him to dig in to but again not needed.
I have 3 who have never hibernated in last 3 yrs
yeah -- the only reason you would need to hibernate the frog is if you want to breed it.
I find them one of the hardiest and overall underrated treefrog
