i don't personally have any of these toads, but there have been a lof of posts about these toads getting sick, both on kingsnake and on other forums as well. do you know who the first person to breed and sell them was?

otis07, not sure who first offered these toads but they have problems for sure. Ed

definetily, haven't heard any sucess stories with them, just problems. when they were first offered they were 100$ and now they are just 40$ some places. there's def. something wrong. they should have seen how long the toads would live and stuff before putting them up for sale.

hell yes!i ended up with a total of 40 babys the size of pea's!and today i have "8"!i did not sale any or loose them all at once they just flipped over one at a time every few days.about 5 or 6 of them did the left side lean and spin thing(genetic).most of them blotted.all where eating fine and no signs of redleg or any thing.some looked to get a swolen brain(raised knot on top of the head).some grew faster than other and some would just not grow.
i found out about the albino's a few year ago from Clive Longden who had the first ones.i think Bob Mailloux or staff got them to breed this year.its all @sandfiredragonranch.com
looks like out breeding is going to be a must!!the F1's are all from albino X albino (poss./prob. wc sibs)breeding.
i'm not mad ,just wish i had weighted a year to get in on them.

the pics are of a wc american that was found in ky. calico leucistic! the right eye was all black.

I believe there is a problem. I have had four of them from two different sources. The first two grew to almost 1.5 inches before the first one seemed to spontaneously begin the final spiral to death. Then one in the second pair bloated and died, eyes pale instead of red, just days prior to death. Its cagemate is bloated up like a grape as I write, and my final 1.5 incher is listless and has the opaque eye thing going on. I have successfully kept and bred herps and I have yet to have a project this challenging. I have tried every substrate, temperature, and vivaium possible. They simply reach a point where they judy fail to thrive. The sad and exasperating thing is that whatever is keeping the toads from thrivinng kicks in after the toadlet stage. They seem to be well-started, but then....

i haven't heard any SUCESS stories. thats pretty bad. the 1st person to breed them should have waited and seen how they turned out b4 selling cause now there's a lot of dead toads and unhappy customers.

Wanted to put a large group of Albino Woodhouse Toads together for breeding out of 60 none made it past 1 1/4" in size. these all came out of Southern California.very disappointing to say the least.

You guys saved me $40 . I was going to order one instead of 2 Malaysian toads as thought it would do as well if not better in my backyard patio (Florida) new toad enclosure (4 foot round kiddie pool with soil and screen top shallow water dish) but will go with the Malaysians now.

Its good to wait a bit before buying some new color ,etc . I learned that few yrs back with blue jack dempsey

thanks

i bought 3 from a mid western source and they are ok so far. the female has grown to pass 3 inch svl, and the males are slightly smaller. i recently witnessed copulation during a weather front. i am now wondering if breeding them would be a good idea if there is an underlying genetic issue.

heres another pic. in terms of husbandry, ive been keeping mine on beach sand (untreated) mixed with topsoil (my yard)- kept very damp. they burrow into this when they want to. there is a stack of cork bark to climb which they do so all day long. they are fed at least 3x a week adult crickets dusted with calcium. the temp of the enclosure is room temp ~ 70-72F.

Fantastic looking toads I love them but afraid of what I read if yours doing well than getting young would be great

perhaps the way you keep them -temps,etc is the key they certainly are nice looking

I just discovered this thread, I too purchased 10 of these Albino Woodhouse Toads in June of 2007 and was really excited to get them, they looked great upon arrival and were larger than I expected. I kept them on paper towels with a shallow water bowl and cork pieces for hiding. The only problem I had was one was "flipping" but seemed ok most of the time. Once they got larger I moved them to a tank with coir and moss substrate and thats when they started to go downhill. They stopped eating and just stayed buried. After a few weeks I moved them back to paper towels but it was too late, they never ate right and just died one by one. The last one bloated up and finally died in March after lingering for a while.

I recently spoke with the breeder and he said they did best with a dry substrate, a basking light and UV. I never thought of toads requiring a basking bulb and probably kept mine too moist and cool especially after moving them to the moss substrate.

It was an expensive dissapointment but hopefully once the husbandry is worked out I will try some again.
