Sick Tomato frog

norad Nov 08, 2007 09:34 AM

I have already made a visit to my Rep vet. But its not in till tomorrow at 3. I recently adopted a tomato frog a week ago he seemed really health. I even brought him to the vet with me when I took my Bearded dragon for a fecal exam cause it was rubbing it head really bad from stress. But since yesterday he started to turn a duller color. He's eyes aren't right there not as open as they where and one seems a little bit swollen.
He's is in a 29g long tank with 4 inches of echo earth. With a big water dish. The humidity is been as a steady 80% and the temp ranges from 70 f to around 80 f from night to day.

I been just using bottled water. But the other day I was called in for an emergency early and asked my GF to water my critters. She just put in regular water. Would chlorine do this to him. She also used it to mist the tank. As soon as I got home I changed it. Could it be eco earth in his eye ? could it be stress ? I really want him to be ok I don't mind at all spending the cash on vet visits at all. This first one is when I first got him he was in a tiny tank.

probably stupid question, but are you sure it isn't shedding it's skin. i flipped out the first time my frog did that and thought it was dying, only to find out... your frogs tank looks great, and it's color is a lot better than most i've seen. i would get fecals done b/c it probably is WC and there4 had parasites, but that wouldn't have anything to do with it's eye thing.

I don't know if it is shedding this is my first amphibians. I have mostly reptiles. He already gotten a fecal I brought in a sample from the Beardie and the frog when I went to the vet last week. It looks a lot better a read to clean it out with Turtle eye drops. The inflammation went down. I don't want to antibiotics till my vet tells me to. I also moistened the substrate a little better. He is a pic from a little while ago. He is still eating and burrowing.

yeah, thats def. not shedding it's skin, it was hard to tell with the other pic. with lots of wild caught animals there is problems with bacterial infections and parasites. i would suggest getting a book on how to treat herp problems. Fredrick Frye has a good one. i have it and there are a few cases that look like that. i can't get to that book right now but if you want i can look it up and see what the diagnosis was. keep doing what you are doing and keep me updated!

I used the eye drops twice before going to the vet today. It looked a lot better. It turned out to be just eco earth in the Nictitating membrane (Third eye lid) She said it probablyy got there from him/her rubbing his head and pushed it in there. Just was really irritatedd. It was just when I first set up the new tank I didn't;t have it moist enough. They tried there best to get it out. They gave me a solution to rinse the eyes and an antibiotic just in case it gets infected.
