I adopted this turtle recently, but his previous owner found him and has no idea what kind of turtle he is. I think he's some kind of map, but I'm not positive. Can anyone help? THANKS!

Also, his previous owner said he never closes his mouth. I think he has some kind of disformity. Anyone ever heard of this? He's over a year old, so it obviously hasn't inhibiited him too much. Thanks again

It is a map turtle though I'm bad at telling the exact species apart. Where was it found? Knowing where the animal came from helps a lot with differentiating between similar species though I'm sure someone can tell you what king of map turtle it is without that info.

Yeah, probably a malformation of some sort. Not normal but if it's still alive and has the ability to eat then great.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not 100% sure where he was found, as I adopted him from someone. I thought she said she found him in Illinois? Maybe? I'll email her and find out.

It appears to be a Common Map turtle (Graptemys geographica), which do occur in Illinois.

I'm thinking Common Map, also.

Definitely a map. But I would worry that it has a respiratory infection if it keeps its mouth open alot, look up care for that but it usually involves increasing temp in water and temp of basking spot, it can be fatal so look in to it and check for the other symptoms, good luck!
