cochran Nov 13, 2007 04:30 PM

Is this frog a leopard or a pickerel? He was found in south central Va.Also,is he dangerous to use for "scenting" pinky mice to feed picky feeders? Thanks!, Jeff

Definitely a pickerel.
Pickerels have spotting that is in two rows down the back and each side. The spots are somewhat symmetrical, more rectangular in shape, and are outlined in black (all like this guy). They also have yellow under the hind legs.

Leopards have irregular spots that are outlined in a light ring of green that looks like a halo and lack the yellow under the legs.

It should be fine for scenting.
