My auratus on his Calathea

I like its color. I forgot what morph you said it was.

My azureus pair really like the Calathea leaves--I have that identical variety in their tank. It's a favorite egg deposit site.

It was called a 'nicaraguan' green and black dart

your frog looks fat and happy one thing though, i noticed the dirt stuck to it. darts don't like that dirt for some reason. it doesn't bother other frogs i guess the darts don't like anything on their back? you can just put some orchid moss or leaf litter over it (or both).

Yah i notice that... i'd say about 60% of the floor is covered with moss..i have some leaf litter..but not much... now that he has settled down i haven't really been seeing anything stuck to him so that's good

I noticed this, too, but just guessed it was a temporary "new-tank" problem with loose particles of soil the frog is dragging about before the substrate gets tamped down and settles. Misting, as you are already doing, should gradually take care of this, but if it persists, more leaf litter as Otis suggests, will also help. Even in my older tanks however, the frogs will still drag some detritus onto the plant leaves. So you might want to spritz them off if this is a problem. (The plant leaves, not the frogs. Few darts appreciate direct "spritzing," although some individuals seem to revel in it.)

When I do my gentle misting, I usually also sharpen the mister adjustment to a more direct spray and also wash the frog poop and stuff from plant leaves with more force, as well.

yah.. i also noticed something else.. the viv has been set up for about 4 days now...my auratus perches in the right hand corner of the tank right on top of the background...doesn't hardly come down.... and if he does it is just to eat, or look around for food, or take a quick dip in the water dish...after doing one of those things he climbs right back up and "perches"

On the plus side i did notice some sort of green moss(i didnt indroduce it) is starting to spread in little patches all over my background.. cant wait until it covers the entire thing

Slaytonp Nov 20, 2007 08:39 PM

He's acting better than one might expect. If he's doing his own thing in full sight and eating, there is no problem.

listen to what Patty said. dirt works in a pinch, but long term the froggies find it rather annoying.
