I've got a maltese dog and a himilayan cat, both are around 10 pounds. I was wondering if it would be safe to introduce a tame blue tegu to the house. It will have its own room of course, but would the occassional encounter with a small dog/cat pose a threat? Would the tegu, however tame it is, still consider them food? Thanks

This could go both ways. I've seen tegus that went great with dogs/cats and I've seen ones that won't have it. If you see any threat posture don't let them near each other as the vet bills will add up quickly. Tegus have an extremely strong bite and their teeth penetrate very far~! I'd hold the tegu and allow the dog/cat to sniff the tegu and see just how they react. Monitor them very carefully. Personally I wouldn't leave them alone.

Great advice. I let my Tegu loose and the dogs have learned to steer clear. She has been known to go after toes. We've got to wear shoes when she is loose. One of my cats would paw at her in her cage until the tegu bit her paw. No damage done, but the cat leaves her alone now.

I wouldn't leave them alone together either.
