Tank Fix-up...New silicone-Plants?

xitch Dec 04, 2007 10:12 PM

Alright,
It's come to my attention that my first vivarium was done a little too quick, and as a consequence, I've got some make-up work to do. Mainly this being adding some silicone to support the background more, especially along edges.
Frogs, of course, will be removed from the viv and placed in a temp. housing tank, my thoughts are a week. I was wondering if the Silicone fumes are going to be toxic to the plants, and in your opinion, how long they'll linger. Water pump will be turned off, and lids off as to promote airflow for drying of the silicone, but will my plants survive the fumes? And, again, how long do you think I'll have to keep the frogs out of the tank?

In my experience, silicone fumes have not bothered the plants. I've even used it to attach the bromeliads. I would keep the lid open, as you intend to do, and you could even blow a fan over it if the fumes seem strong to you, but it will be all right to leave the plants where they are.

Usually silicone will "cure" in 72 hours, but just to be super-safe, I'd keep it open about a week before putting the frogs back. I've heard reports of silicone failing to "cure" within 3 days, but have never had it happen myself.

Thanks Patty,
for this and all of the other help you've provided.

Do you get on any other dart forums (dendroboard, for example) and if so, your user name on those?

I'm on Dendroboard as well, and simply use "Patty," as I'm too old to remember anything fancier than my own name. I wish more of those guys would hang out here, too. This is a great place for other herpers to discover dart frogs for the first time, and I think it's important for everyone else to stick around and share what they learn and offer different opinions. So don't run off!!
