Tegu Identity

fhayden1 Dec 13, 2007 10:14 AM

I just picked up a pair of tegu. When I bought them I wastold they are Argentines but I'm having my doubts. Can someone please tell me if they are Argentine or Colombian?

By the way, I'm building there cage and have them on newspaper for now. I should be done by this weekend and will be using cypress mulch.

Thanks. They are something else. Bert from Agama and Stella from albinotegu.com confirmed it with me. I can't believe the rep these guys get. They are friendly not incarnate evil. You'd think I have the only tame pair in existence. It makes me think maybe I shouldn't just sell them for so cheap.

I appreciate the reply. I was beginning to wonder is anyone posted here anymore..lol

Best Regards and Happy Holidays.

Instead of Cypress, why not keep them on dirt and let them utilize a substrate they recognize?

I have a Colombian that is not so evil. She is more of a B/W color and doesn't have the gold that your pair does. I would definitely advertise the fact that your tegus are handleable if they are.

I keep all of my tegus on mulch and they enjoy it quite a bit. They dig in and burrow.

Someone actually mentioned that to me the other day. Seeing how tame gold tegu are rare I should advertise that. I've gotten a few phone calls today about them. Of course, people want to try to haggle me down. I'm not going to budge seeing how this is a proven pair.

I want to set them up in the garage with a nice sized cage. If I handle them occasionally I hope this will maintain their tameness. I'm not the type to handle my reptile a lot like some people I know.

I purchased 3 bags of cypress from home depot so they can burrow. I've noticed they like to burrow when they go to sleep in the evening.

I think I saw your ad....are you in St. Pete? We're in the Orlando area. I better not let my daughter see your ad. She loves Colombians but we're just about out of room!! We already have a large B/W, a baby B/W who will one day need a large cage, and a Colombian who looks like she just outgrew her cage. Plus, a 12ft snake and a 7ft snake, and quite a few other herps. I think we're converting part of our garage into a herp room this year.
