Just HOW big can Staurotypus get ???

Katrina Dec 13, 2007 05:20 PM

A friend gave me a 4" Staurotypus triporcatus (giant Mexican musk). Now that I've been doing some research, I see conficting information on the typical and max adult size - some say 12", some 14", and now I see an ad that says 16"!

Just what did I get myself into?

Katrina

P.S. I do intend to keep her.

Well, triporcatus can grow to be big...in the wild. But I haven't seen many captive raised ones that were much over 10 inches. Maybe in time and a lot of room they might reach 12 inches. I raised one for about four years that was a female and she grew to be about 8 inches and then really slowed down. A wonderful animal though!
S. salvinii is smaller.
Both make fantastic display turtles and are very responsive.

They appear to be near 14 inches next to the dwarf caimins & mata matas in the same enclosure.

There are some in that size range at the Nashville Zoo, too. They're as big as full-grown female snappers.
