How to keep 'frog moss' happy

phoenixcry Dec 18, 2007 05:15 PM

I have a very moist planted vivarium that I recently added some petstore bought 'Frog moss'. This stuff comes dried out in like little pads of moss. They say to press it into the soil, mist it, and it will be happy.

For the first few days it looked great! Bright green. Then it quickly went down hill, turning yellowish. I have it in four diffrent spots: one very wet with low light, one moist with high light, one dry-ish high light, one dry-ish with med light.

NONE of it is happy.

Any thoughts?

Here's a pic when it was happy:

I just noticed that the title of my forum makes it look like a tutorial, but it's actually a plea for help.

i have kept a lot of differnet kinds of moss, and that stuff is hard to keep. it needs to be watered every day until it "livens up", but make sure the drainage is good also. when it starts to look more alive water it a few times a week, it likes temps 72-85ish. i got mine to live, but it has yet to grow very much. if you want a fast growing moss i would suggest baby tear moss or java moss.

i would say drainage is probably the most important part in keeping it "happy"

it's tempting to make it really wet, but trust me, it will do a lot better moistened every few days. that's why my first treefrog cage went downhill, i kept the moss too wet.
