Pac man frog illness?

snakelady2 Dec 23, 2007 03:26 PM

Our awesome exotic vet isn't open for the next couple days, but my pac man is exhibiting some strange behavior since feeding him. He doesn't look impacted, but he seems to be shaking a little bit involuntarily (his back legs). He doesn't appear to have red leg or anything unusual (he has a filter in his tank, we keep it very clean), he just seems to have this strange twitch and some trouble digesting. I fed him a small, thawed mouse with a vitamin supplement on it. He's been eating these mice for years and it's never been a problem. He has a Zoo med heat pad on one side of the tank. If you have any suggestions to get him through the holiday that would be great. He's a young frog, only about 4 years old, albino. Thanks!

If the legs are twitching it could be a sign of kidney problems. Do you feed anything other than mice? A straight mouse diet is not recommended for these frogs; you need to vary the diet with other things. If you have him in a wet substrate at this point, drying him out a bit might be one way to restore kidney function. Just let the substrate get dry, but make sure you have a water dish available, so if he gets too dry he can hop in it.

thanks so much! He's actually feeling better, but we'll let the substrate dry out a little. He has the tendancy to be very picky and only want to eat mice, but yes we do try to vary his diet (worms, fish, etc).
