blue colour change in giant day gecko?

caz913 Dec 25, 2007 11:09 PM

Hello, I have had my giant day gecko for a year (since he was a baby), and he has usually been a bright green, sometimes a dark brownish green when he's stressed. He is quite healthy and eats normally. About 2 weeks ago, I cleaned his tank, and then a few days later brought him home with me for the holidays. He has now since seemed a little more stressed and has been hiding inside his bamboo for most of the day, although he has still been eating and drinking water. His head has turned an unusual blue colour, but the rest of his body is the usual green. I am worried about him and was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is just a case of him being stressed and it will pass, or if it is something I should be more concerned about. I have a photo, but have not yet figured out how to upload onto here, but I would appreciate any information you can give! Thank you!

The blue shouldn't be something to worry about. Usually I see the blue on mine on the tails but it can appear on the head as well. It usually means you have a nice colored grandis. As long as it is eating and drinking fine everything should be ok.

Thanks MadAxe,
That makes me feel a bit better... Louie seems ok, but I wasn't sure because it's something I've never seen before. He is a pretty nice colour though, including the blue! It seems as though it's fading a bit too, so maybe he's changing back to green. Thanks for the reassurance!

The blue tends to show on the tail more than the head but just yesterday my dog got into a grandis cage and my wife pointed out some blue and a little orange on the head and around the eyes of the grandis when she recaptured it.

do you think it could be from stress? I've noticed a little blue on Louie's front hand. I'm wondering how he'll deal with the move back after the holidays. Do you know how to post pictures on here without a URL? Thanks!

I'm telling you don't worry about the blue coloration. When they stress they get dark sometimes almost black. Then they are either stressed or very cold(still stress) on occasion you will also see the dark coloration first thing in the morning before they warm up (still cool but not necessarily cold). If you see this dark coloration for a prolonged period of time then something may not right. Of course the biggest stressor is messing with them too much as long as you have them in a decent set-up and leave them alone Grandis day geckos are easy. As far as posting pictures... well I don't know as I am not that computer savy yet.
