Set-up for the snapping turtles

retaks13mac Dec 29, 2007 08:20 PM

I have 3 common snapping turtles ranging from 5 to 8 inches. I currently have them in a 90 gallon indoor pond that is a little more then half filled(im using the ledges as there basking spots) I want to upgrade there set-up and get a 180 gallon tank for them and I am unsure on a few things. I would like to get a better filter for the tank and I am unsure if what to get. Anyone have any suggestions on good filters for around 100 gallons worth of water for snapping turtles? I am also unsure on how to go about for making them a basiking spot. Again any suggestions on how to do that as well would be nice. I was thinking about just taking 3/8 inch plexi glass and cutting it to the width of the tank and culking that into the tank on an angle and willing the "land" side with either dirt, sank or pea gravel(kind of like a waterland tub set up) Please give me any suggestion you may have on filters or basking areas as well. If it works out well I am going to do the same thing for my other group of turtles.

I use Fluval 4 plus filters in my big tanks and they work really well. As for a basking area, my snappers stopped basking at around 6-8 months old so I removed their basking area.

Thanks for the input, mine are all 2 to 3 years old and still bask. The largest(id say around 8 inches) I still see bask atleast once a week. My question is would the Fluval 4 for good enough for 100 gallons of water? Or do you use multiples? Bescause I have I believe a Fluval 4 in the smaller indoor pond(which is only 40ish gallons) with my RES and Cooters and it still need a frequent water changes and filter changes, more then my other filters.

I use a single Fluval 4 Plus in a 150 gal. and single Fluval 3's in my smaller tanks and my water always looks good with a bi-weekly partial water change and pad rinsing.

in use the fluval canisters with my alligator snapper and a tetra pond filter with my big boy.. they both work great.. I can get by without a lot of water changes

my fluval 4 works good for a 100g snapper and musk pond, i just have to change the water completely every 2 weeks because its outside with a walnut tree 50ft away. walnuts are not good for water clarity. but for the filter its great, just rinse out the pads and keep going.

In my experience I've found RES and cooters to have WAY dirtier tanks.
