Help with i.d. please...

davemangham Jan 05, 2008 12:27 PM

... with this turtle.

Photographed in 'The Bailey Tract', on Sanibel, Florida, in Dec 2007.

I believe either a Peninsula Cooter (P. floridana peninsularis) or a Florida Redbelly (P. pseudemys rubriventis), but field guides sometimes lack the ability to differentiate between the two. If you can i.d. could you please give your reasons so that I might learn for the future.

Thanks
Dave

That's a picture of a Peninsula Cooter, Pseudemys peninsularis. The high domed front to the shell with the sloping back says Peninsula cooter as does the moustache line not making it down to the jaw line.
Great picture.
