Baby GTF is bloated... help!

KEdwards Jan 06, 2008 10:24 AM

Ive been keeping frogs for 10 years, and Ive never seen this, maybe you folks have.

My albino baby GTF seems to be full of air. This started after 3 weeks of no fruit flies, I finally went to petsuck, deathco, whatever....and bought some tiny mealworms. 3 weeks later, no fruit flies, but plenty of pinhead crickets...and he's passing his food ok, so no impaction..... What the heck is going on here? its been a while, and he hasnt DIED, but I'm still very concerned!!!! I'd really appreciate some input, this little guy is one of a kind, and very sweet. I'd hate for anything bad to happen to him.

my guess is either impaction or bloat from something like internal bleeding. does he look bruised anywhere? bloat is a symptom, not an diagnosis, you should try to take it to a vet if you have a good one locally.

No bruising. No impaction, he is passing his food normally. He has both front feet on the glass, presumably to take the weight off his belly. I can see through his skin...if there was bleeding I'd see it. I'm actually bringing a snake to the vet for an x-ray tuesday maybe I'll bring the frog. He's so tiny, about 3/4 of a dime, I dont like moving him.

good luck with going into the vet, who knows what they will say. i have kept this frog and they really like hiding in the crevices of leaves, so maybe bake some leaves and toss them in the tank that you are bringing the frog in to the vet? def. give it lots of hiding places.

Yep, thats him.

A buddy suggested it was caused by kidney trouble, and to flush him with lots of fresh water....seemed to help, actually. Not fixed, but its a big start. Ive never seen this before, I'm just stumped.

phantoms Jan 07, 2008 10:29 PM

how is he albino? he looks green. his eyes arent pink?

i am sorry that he is sick though and i wish i could help. good luck man, keep us updated. do you have a pic after you flushed him with fresh water and said he looked better?

KEdwards Jan 07, 2008 11:34 PM

a more appropriate term might be amelanistic, or maybe hypomelanistic. He has yellow and blue pigments.....but really....you can split hairs all day with these morphs and in the end you have an animal lacking pigment, and I dont really care what you call it. I'm more into science than the hobby I guess....so instead of sounding like a jerk in front of normal folks and spouting hypomelanistic or amelanistic, I just say albino, and they get it..I dont like people to think I'm talking down to them, or showing off, thats all. I guess you guys all know the special names

Thanks for your good wishes....this guy is one of a kind and I'd just die if I killed him.

It is deflated today, and hopefully if we keep flushing it, whatever is bothering its kidneys will pass. I removed a potted plant, in case extra phosphorus leaching out from the soil, or any fertilizers is the culprit.
