Sexing Questions(Please read)

Frilled13 Jan 15, 2008 09:57 AM

I apologise to anyone who sent an email as my system crashed.
Hi,what are hemiphine buldges because i think my lizard has them because hes has 2 small buldges at the base of the tail but he looks like the picture of the frilled on the thread about frillie fangs(take a look) and everybody says that ones female but he appears 2 have hemiphine buldges and if you read this please tell me what they are(i am only 13). What age do their "fangs" become noticable enough to tell its a male because mines about 16 months and im going to check.Lastly if anyone has any pics of different colour morphs of frillies like the red one or albino (if that exists) please show me.
Thanks in advance

Most people are helpul with the advice that they give in these forums, but if nobody is answering your posts, it most likely means that nobody knows. I try to help people with the information I give here and there but some things I just don't want to guess on. There are things that require a reptile specialized vet to take a look at. I suggest you do so or look into it somewhere online if you need the info, because I am sure we would all like to help but if we dont know then we dont know.

first of all i think its really cool that you like reptiles at 13, i got my first tokay gecko when i was 4 and now im 22and breed/keep all kinds of stuff

to semi answer your question males usually have larger heads and frills, but im pretty sure they dont reach sexual maturity till about 18 months to 2 years, it can be qutie difficult to sex any lizard and you almost need a male and female next to each other to tell about the buldges especially at a young age, hope i have helped atleast alittle

Currently I have an adult pair of black throat monitors and a 2ft savanah, but I've kept frills, all kinds geckos, armadillo lizards, Nile monitors, I had my green iguana for 18 years, I had a savanah when i was younger(not tha one i have now)and mountain horned lizards. When I was younger my mom wouldn't let me keep anything that ate mice so I also had pacman frogs, newts, and tarantulas( that I still keep today)and large predatory fish, but I did manage to sneak those monitors in LOL. As i got older, I became more interested In snakes.

well a bunch can be overwhelming at times lol unfortunantly last year i had to sell most of my collection(o.1 15ft super tiger, 0.1 10ft albino retic, 1.0 7ft dwarf het albino retic, 1.0 7ft albino lab burm, 0.1 8ft albino granite burm, and 1.1 false water cobras) for some bills, but other than the monitors(my savanah is 3 or 4 now and the black throats i took from my friends shop because no one that he sold them to could keep them, they were brought back twice, about a year ago)i have 1.0 13ft tiger retic, 1.1 green anacondas, 1.0 leusitic texas rat, o.1 scrub(extra mean) and a female chaco goldstripe and and salmon giant pink birdeater(tarantulas) hopefully this summer ill be able to build back up, but stick with it homie!!!

You will not be able to sex your frill until after a year. When they are first hatched you can look at the base of the tail and make 90% guess because you can se the hemis. But then fat storage covers them up; and popping is scary with these guys. They are not like Beardeds. I had really nice baby that I thought was female, but now that it is growing I think its a male. go figure...
Full grown adults are easy. BUT.. not if they are recent imports that are under weight and dehydrated. I get emails all the time from people that buy imports and the sex ratio is wrong, really wrong.

This animal in the post I thought was a female since its frill was really short; now I thinks its male.
Just be patient and take good care of the he-she.
cheers,
miz
