Ending hibernation

Giel Jan 19, 2008 02:26 PM

Hi,

Since the temperature is increasing in The Netherlands I have to end the hibernation of my Coachwhips a bit earlier. I wanted to make two separate cages for the male and the female but only one is finished at the moment. So I can choose between keeping them a bit longer at an intermediate temperature, which I think is not too smart with snakes with such high metabolism. Or I can put them together in one cage after hibernation.

How do you do this? Any advice?

I planned to put them separately for a week or two, feed them and than put them together. But since only one cage is finished I’m not sure what to do.

They are adults and should be a couple. I will make some pictures when they are out of the hibernation.

Kind regards

Gilian

I'm in the same position as you,I have a hibernating male and I've borrowed Mikes female (also hibernating).
My plan is to keep them seperate for about a month as they warm-up and feed and then place them together.

This is my first attempt at breeding coachwhips,so I am NO EXPERT!!

Can anyone come in and add to this ????

Hi Paul,

I think that would be the best way. I ended the hibernation and keep them together in one cage at the moment. Tomorrow I will make a new cage and separate them. Because of the high temperatures during the last pasrt of the hibernation, the female lost some weight. So I really had to end hibernation. Next year I have to buy a separate fridge…

You also have two wild caught animals?

Kind regards

Yes...I think the 2 adults that me and Mike have are originally wild caught, although they have been captives for a long time now.

Just a quick note, most of mine seem to be feeding now. Even the newer female has taken a chick after just watching them for ages.

Just got the adult eastern and the smaller male western to go then all adults are feeding.

Are they difficult to get to start eating after hibernation? I expected that they would eat as idiots but mine are very cautious.

Mine have not been any problem so far, though most of them are LTC anyway, the newer females that I got mid 2006 took ages to get feeding again last year and never fed well throughout (though enough, just not good feeders), but this year the one I still have here has just taken a chick almost straight off the tongs.

Hopefully Paul will have the same luck with my other female and his new western male.

Both my male westerns tend to start eating well with no problems, the old female I kept warm as she still has poor bodytone.

Mike
