keeping cali's together

hmwalatka Jan 22, 2008 06:42 PM

we recently went to a reptile show and got 2 cali's. they are about 6-8 inches long. The man told us we could keep them together but doing more research says they will eat other snakes and should be seperated. Is this going to be a problem? They have been together for 2 days now.

Do NOT keep cali's together. This is always a bad idea. Kingsnakes are cannibalistic, you can't keep them in the same tank with any other snake or that snake will become dinner. At hatchling age, you might be able to keep them together for a little bit, but I certainly don't recommend it.

Get two 20 gallon tanks and separate the kings.

If cal kings are raised together from hatchlings, and if they are kept well fed, they can be kept together in groups. It is not entirely without risk, but its been done many times.

I have to ask why you would want to keep them together though. There are about a million good reasons why you should keep snakes separately and hardly any to keep them together.

If you keep the kings well fed you may be ok. But why take the chance.....Do not keep the kings together. If one get's hungry and thinks it can swallow the other one will be gone when you get home.
Keep them seperate.
