Amazon Basin YELLOW FOOTS

geebaby Jan 24, 2008 11:11 AM

Hi all. I just acquired a 4" yellow footed tortoise the Amazon Basin kind. Now, as far as what I've researched, these specifically grow larger than the standard yellow foot; reaching lengths of over 2 feet. Does anyone here have any Amazon Basin yellow foots and what are your experience with them (is there a photo you can post here?)? Thanks and hope to hear from all of you.

there is a book on the turtles and tortoises of French Guiana with a picture of a huge denticulata - unfortunately it is in black and white but still an astounding picture - most of the largest red and yellowfoots are disappearing across their ranges - some of the largest are in South American zoos

French Guiana is, of course, not the Amazon Basin

I think they can get longer than 2 feet. I have some from the Amazon Basin – but they are still babies – I think they are about 4 years now. The book Turtles of the World Vol. 3 (South America) suggest 60-82cm (2-2.75 feet). My understanding is the ones from Peru and Bolivia can grow much larger (over 3 feet). My female is growing much faster than my male (Well the ones I think are female and male) and hopefully they will start to breed in the next two years.

Mine live with me in my apartment and follow my girlfriend around the house – they tend to search for her when let free in the living room.
