Building a "biosphere" for my ball...

jameswpope Jan 25, 2008 07:45 PM

Where can I find some plans for building a water-tight, humidity resistant enclosure for my ball python. I only need the front to be see-through.

My goal is to build a biosphere for my ball that will be displayed in classroom, complete with live native flora and a small filtration system to keep the water clean and pure for drinking and soaking.

Any suggestions?

Okay, my first suggestion is that if you can find a copy of this book: http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Terrariums-Complete-Herp-Care/dp/0793828910/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203113124&sr=8-1 It's called "Natural Terrariums" and the author is Philip Purser, get it. It might be available in your library, I had to pick one up in a pet store. The guy goes through all the steps in making living terrariums (aka vivariums).

Anyway, it's suggested that a ball python does best in a savanna setup, so you need grasses and acacias. I don't know exactly what plants are in a ball python's normal habitat, but it can be hard to get the exact plants from his habitat to thrive in a tiny (comparitively) terrarium. There are a few other excellent books out there on the subject, or maybe another herper who has experience with pythons could add his/her two cents.
