I've kept a small one (ca. 20" SVL). He was bolder than the similar-sized yellow-belly and diamond-back that I had at the same time; he didn't burrow in the litter like they did, and wasn't skittish. He accepted handling fairly well, and ate like a pig. I ended up being forced to give him away when I moved, so I can't speak to his long-term health.
You're right, they are gorgeous animals. Very high contrast pattern. Sorry, I don't have any photos of the little guy.
Thanks for the info! I've never seen one of them in person but, would love to! Take care!, Jeff
Here's a (bad) picture of my broad banded water snake, Jorge. I'm ridiculously fond of him and of broad banded water snakes in general. He's a very VERY good eater, given his habit of eating anything that I offer him. He's also tough as nails. I hardly ever need to use any kind of temperature control things with him, and in fact, when he was loose in my house's vents, he came out none the worse for his experience, and he took care of our cricket problem while he was down there. He is a little brat sometimes though. Sometimes he can nip, but it's a pretty half hearted attempt. He's also very fast and moves around quite a bit, though whether that's a Jorge thing or a broad banded thing, I don't know. But they do have awesome markings.

Thanks for the pic!Just a little blurry but,you can still tell that he's a beautiful snake! Jeff
