Enclosure Materials? Please Reply

2006patbat Feb 03, 2008 08:07 PM

I'm considering purchasing a CWD. I've done a good deal of research online, read a few books and such, but I still have some questions that I can't seem to find answers to elsewhere.
Mostly I'm wondering about the enclosure. I've got a rather large home-built one that was used for some large variety of snake by its previous owners, and I'd like to adapt it for use with a dragon, if possible.
Problem is, I don't quite know where to begin. For starters, the frame is made from pinewood. Is that toxic? I'm aware that there are some troubles with cedar fumes, does pine have the same issue?
Also, the wire mesh is quite wide, with gaps about a centimeter in diameter. I intended to replace or cover that with a finer mesh, any suggestions on that? Also, with any mesh what kinds of things will I need to keep the humidity up?

Maybe the cage is a lost cause, of course. It just seems like something of a waste not to at least /try/ to make it work.

Kiln dried and UN treated...with ventilation holes might be ok...Is the whole thing mesh?...if it is i would enclose sides and back with more wood or plexiglass...wire mesh on the top is ok...but with ours we duct tape good portion of it off to hold in humidity...leaving enough room for the heat lamp and some ventilation

i was thinking snake enclosure...for a water dragon it will be a little different....i would enclose the sides and back or put plants or something in those areas....if they can see through it they might not realize there is a barrier there and run into it causing snout damage...that happened to mine while he was still at the pet store......if you screen in the top the mesh CANNOT be a tight mesh...that would block out alot of UVB from the bulb...as would glass or plastic....we used rabbit wire on the top of ours...now for humidity i put moistened sphagnum moss in my enclosure...and in the next few days i am gonna put a few live plants in...Pothos and Dracaena (Dragon Plant)...hopefully that will help too

Thanks for your input, Rita I've been discussing this with someone on another forum who seems to have some good advice. The cage is 6 ft. high, 4 ft. deep and 4 ft wide. I've decided to seal the pine frame, cover the sides and back with sealed plywood and cover the front with Plexiglas. Thanks for the info on the top though - I wasn't quite sure what to do with it. The mesh is very open, so I'm sure it won't block any of the UV. Using duct tape to hold in the humidity is something I'd not thought of before, though. :D
I think sphagnum moss is what I'll use as a substrate, I hear it helps a lot with humidity and is pretty safe.
Thanks again!
