We rescued some eggs, now what?

Gnuby Feb 03, 2008 09:38 PM

I tried posting on the AFT and even Leos forums on RepticZone, but they are a little slow. Hope you all can help a bit!

Long story short, we saw a pair of eggs in the AFT tank at Petco (while we were getting some lights). We told the employee that we would take them if they were just going to toss them. (They didn’t even know they were eggs). The manager gave em to us for free. The were white and both had some slight denting, one more than the other. The more dented one was a bit lighter weight-wise than the less dented one. I didn’t want to handle them more than needed otherwise I would have taken weights. We put them in some damp Bed-a-Beast in a plastic, like, gladware thing with holes on the top. We then set that unit into a spare 10g tank with a purple/black night light (I wish exo-terra would label wattages!). We waited for the temps to get to about 84-85 and put the tub under the lamp. Anything else we should try? Besides waiting a few weeks. Also, we don’t even know if they were fertilized, I heard it takes about 2 weeks to ’candle’ them. I imagine they will collapse and rot if they are not fertile fast. Thanks so much!

Not sure I can be much help but if you don't have an incubator then you've done about all you can but wait. I haven't had the good fortune to get eggs myself so I'm only speaking from heresay. It does take some time before you can candle them. It's been a couple days, how do they look today? Are they filling back out? Depending on if they're fertile and how long they
were in the store tank before you found them the caving in may be a sign that they are ready to hatch. Don't rally have anything else for you. Good luck and keep us informed.

Yea, I didn't want to invest in an incubator if the eggs are not even fertile! Well, the eggs haven't gotten any worse looking, but they do not appear to be any better either. We are trying not to disturb them, just checking every few days that the substrate is moist and they get some fresh air (there are air holes, but still). I can't imagine they were in the store tank long, the girl was surprised when I told her (then looked in the wrong tank for them, shows how much they know!). I saw a picture either on here or on RepticZone of some fresh eggs, and they looked A LOT better than the ones I rescued. So, we are almost 5 days in now, if they don't start filling out or something, we will let them 'incubate' the way they are until they start to degrade. But, heck, they are at least getting a chance now.

I think I would too, keep them till they go bad that is. You might get lucky . Well, good luck and keep us updated.

Checking on the eggs tonight and they have gotten quite furry with mold. I guess they were no good from the start. Oh well, we tried. Thanks for the concern and help everyone!
