Suggestions for Hides

KevinM Feb 07, 2008 03:51 PM

What are you guys using for suitable hide boxes?? I just got my new four x two foot cage in for my plated today(currently in a three footer)and want to vamp up the enclosure. He loves his shoe box hide, but I want something a bit more naturalistic and nicer looking in general. The standby half log hides really dont seem long enough and plant pot saucers dont look high enough. I am leaning towards pieces of pvc pipe. Any other cool suggestions would be appreciated.

mine seem to use flatter hides more than the taller half-circle kind. I a big piece of bark that I found in my yard(I cooked it in the oven to kill parasites) I have another hide that is made of sticks wired together and it can be bent in to the shape you want it. I have another hide that is just a lid from a storage container that lays across two bricks. lots of stuff can work.

Provide your lizard with whatever tight fitting hide you can find. Those half logs they sell at pet stores are garbage! They don't allow the reptiles any protection unless you bury them in substrate so the lizard can burrow his way in. Think about lizards in the wild. When you try and catch them, where is the first place they go? Either a burrow or if a pile of rocks is nearby they'll try and find the tightest crack possible. It's so predators can't get in or pull them out. It gives them the secrity that they most likely won't be eaten. Great hides are something wear the lizards belly touches the floor and the top of the lizard touches the roof. Reptiles don't care to live in palaces for hides, because if its a palace then that means a predator can most likely get in and eat them. They want something they can get in and the predator can't.
