Fire belly newts

klunkers Feb 09, 2008 05:59 PM

What are some steps to creating a good fire belly newt home?
Also, what fish are compatible with them?

No fish are really compatible because FBNs like cold water and fish like a higher temperature.

FBN are toxic, so you really shouldn't put any fish in with them, but if you have a really big tank (75 gallons) with one newt the concentration of toxin shouldn't be enough to kill them.

i just wouldn't put any fish you care about in with it.

They do not constantly leak poison. They release it when bothered, such as when the keeper handles them or when tankmates try and eat them. So that is not a problem.

Not all fish are from warm tropical waters, so that is not an issue either. There are a number of fish that will thrive in the same room temp range the newts will prefer. These include many danios including white clouds, guppies, platies, and others.

Obviously the tank needs to be big enough and setup in the right way to properly house them together, but it can be done.

yeah, but not easily. it would be less to have a separate tank of each that one big tank.
