Does anyone know the best type of calcium to buy and where to get it? I need a lot as you can see from the size of my torts, but I do not have a fortune to spend. I have not given them any in about 5 months because of our move to the country, but it’s been warm and it’s about time to start giving them collards again. “They do not eat much hay when it’s warm outside” Thanks for any help.

I've heard that some people use Tums, that's about as cheap as you can get. You can also buy turtle/tortoise cuddlebones, or buy bulk calcium.

I just picked up a two pack of Zoomed turtle bones for a couple of bucks. They are roughly 6 inches long and about an inch wide.

Hope this helps!

I buy mine from Jeff a CBWF, I don't know if its out of your price range but it was the cheapest I could find. Here:

Vic Morgan pointed it out to me when I first aquired my Mtn Tortoise. I usually see him post in the "general tortoise" forum. He seemed to get a kick out of telling me about it... I hope that I didn't steal his thunder here....Dope..My bad!

I usually use Repcal calcium with D3, but have thrown in some Tums. I used a file to grate them into dust, as I was unsure if it would be safe to just throw in "chunks".

Anyway, if you know who Vic is, he can help you with the Tums question much better than I can. I think he's been doing it for a while.

Go to a local agriculture feed store (for farming, etc) and you can get 25 lb or 50lb bags of pure calcium carbonate for cheap. That is what many breeders use.
