Eye is Matted Shut.......

lcfish10 Feb 18, 2008 01:31 PM

hi Jim K. here........i just got back my 3 Crevice spiny Lizards from a friend of mine and one has developed a condition that I have heard about, but not seen personally. One eye is matted shut and the other doesn't look bad at all. The lizard is pretty active though I haven't seen him eat anything. I had several Baytril tablets left over and decided to give him 1/4 tablet every other day and see if that helps him. I am hoping it will.
I need someone who has experienced this with their lizards to see if this is the right way to go. Is there drops that can be used to put on their eye to help moisten this up?
Thanks for the help here.

If there is a herp vet in your area, that would be your best bet. You may have to drive a bit. Call ahead and interrogate them a first to feel out how much they really know about herps (if they give you husbandry advice that you know is very wrong, find someone else). Taking a guess on dosage is liable to do more harm than good and if some kind of ointment is necessary it's not likely to be over the counter.

In the mean time, I'd flush the eye out with some saline solution and set the lizard up on paper towels. Stay clear of anything that could get in the eye.

Also evaluate your UV lighting. There have been reports of some bulbs irritating eyes producing symptoms that mimic an eye infection. Check out: http://www.uvguide.co.uk/ and make sure you're not using one of the problem bulbs.

hi alice.......jim kendrick here
i have an excellent vet although, she is pricey.........this crevice evidently had this condition quite a long time......
the lizard didn't make it as it passed on 2 days after i got it back from the guy. the other 2 have been checked out since i thought it might be contagious but they are clean. i wish i would have known several weeks sooner what was going on.......this is a good example of why some people need to be more aware of what is going on with there reptiles.....you see something that doesn't lok normal generally does not go away on it's own.
alice.....i appreciate the response and hope to talk again down the road. have a great weekend dear

Yes I agree get it to the vet. I know it sucks but its the price we pay and responsibility we take.
