New to Breeding Cresties

beth60 Feb 26, 2008 05:04 PM

Hi - we are new to breeding reptiles and are excited about our adventure with our crested geckos. So here is the dumb question situation. We introduced our male to the female cage last night. He immediately went up the tree and dropped a load of white stuff, which I am assuming is sperm, on the branch. Is this usual or plain strange? LOL - I hope he didn't think the tree branch was her. How often will he do this - ie. each time a new female comes along.

He also had a grand time for a few hours following the female around and giving her some nips, but never mounted her? Is this an indication that it will happen soon?

I've seen my gecko do that a couple of times, it's pretty normal and it won't hurt him. Just watch out for a prolapse (when he doesnt retract). but I dont think you have to much to worry about.

Thanks. He did the same thing again tonight. Hope he aims the stuff better soon! He sure is nipping at his partner a lot but hasn't tried to get her. Of course, I'm not staying up to watch them all night.

Another question - will he stay away from her for awhile after they mate the first time or does he keep mating. I did read the Rhac book, but it doesn't go into detail about that.

well, he will keep mating as long as they are together. most, myself included, seperate them for a few months out of the year just so the females don't get worn out. Make sure that you give them Calcium suppliments in their food also so they don't crash.
