Broad Banded Water Snake, hypo?

Trolligans Mar 03, 2008 09:57 AM

I've probably seen hundreds of Broad Bands in my life but I've never seen one so light that at a distance I thought it was a dull copperhead. Could this possibly be a hypo?
All other specimens in the area were significantly darker, displaying the usual coloration of a broadband. This one specimen, however, doesn't seem to display any black pigment.

Thoughts?

here's another snake from the same area for a reference. This specimen was identical in size and was only about 40 feet away.

Looks hypo to me. A guy to ask would be Scott Felzer, try asking for him on the garter snake forum.

Looks hypo to me!There is something about those broad bandeds that is very appealing to me.Maybe it's because they resemble copperheads. Jeff

trolligans Mar 04, 2008 09:34 AM

My little brother told my mom that it was a copperhead and that he had captured it. She got so mad at me that I thought she might attack. Then he told her what it actually was. It was pretty funny.

cochran Mar 04, 2008 05:21 PM

Lol! That's a good story! Man,that darker one resemble a water moccasin! If those were native to this area(central Va.)they would truly catch hell from folks around here. Jeff

mfoux Mar 04, 2008 10:03 PM

Everybody back home in Louisiana kills these thinking they are moccasins. And anything light brown is a copperhead.

And anything small that doesn't resemble a moccasin or a copperhead is a "ground rattler".

mfoux Mar 05, 2008 09:10 AM

Yeah, who would've know that brown snakes and DeKay's snakes could be so deadly! Or as some "expert" told me,
"Naw, them don't kill you, they just make you run fever and swell up real bad."
"But they don't even have rattles." I said.
"Naw, they ain't got no rattles. It's still a groun' raddler."

Around here you really have to watch out for those spread head moccasins, they're deadly!l.o.l. Jeff

trolligans Mar 05, 2008 11:41 AM

There's no such thing as spread heads, but watch out for those Stub Tail Moccasins. They're the worst.

mfoux Mar 05, 2008 03:33 PM

Dude, did you ever here Aunt Corrine's story about the racer that chased her and whipped her ankles with it's tail? Keeping up with a running human AND whipping the tail at the same time. I'd be impressed by any snake that could do that! I think it was more likely her pants legs that were whipping her ankles.

Or the "hognose chicken snake" that eats eggs? Supposedly, you can kill it by placing round doorknobs in the nest. The snake mistakes the doorknobs for eggs, swallows them and dies. I'm not even kidding. I actually heard this one, but to save the guilty party some embarrassment, I won't tell you who said it. It's someone we know.

I think Louisiana only has 6 species of snake. The Chicken Snake which eats only eggs, the Milk Snake that drinks from cows, the Puff Adder, the Stub Tail Moccasin, the Ground Rattler, and the Whip Snake that whips people's legs and also bites its tail and rolls down hills like a hoola hoop.

mfoux Mar 05, 2008 03:39 PM

So what's a spread head moccasin? A hognose? Back home they call them puff-adders!

And amphiumas are congo eels.

mfoux Mar 05, 2008 09:50 PM

Ah, yes. Very dangerous indeed.
Funny thing is I almost grabbed a real moccasin once thinking it was one of these. That's when I decided to go to the eye doctor. Sure enough, I needed glasses.

yeah, that's a puff adder.
You can tell because they puff up when frightened.

mfoux Mar 04, 2008 07:19 AM

Dude, that does look like it might be hypo. The only areas that may be black are some of the markings right behind the head, but it's hard to tell with those rough keeled scales being dry. Maybe next time I'm in town we can go look for some more.
The way you would test to see if the trait is simple recessive is to breed this one to a normal, then breed the offspring to each other and to the suspected hypo parent. You should get a mix of hypos and normals by the 2nd generation. If you want to do this, I'll help you build racks for all these guys.
