fungus among us..

weebeasties Mar 04, 2008 05:14 PM

Some one gave me a red eared slider today. She is about 7 inches long. I don't know anything about her care except she was kept at room temps in an unheated house. She doesn't appear sick but she is pink. Literally a pinkish color is coating her skin. She feels slimy. I have bathed her in a mild betadine solution and scrubed her skin with a soft tooth brush. I rinsed well and am now drying her out a bit. I am warming her up slowly and alot of the pink is gone or much lighter. (Seen this color in stuff in my frigerator once in a while and it does not belong on a living animal!LOL) I am assuming the pink stuff is a fungus of sorts. Any ideas or advice for this poor pink girl. Thanks

Is it fuzzy looking?

She could also be discolored from poor diet, etc. Also is could be a systemic infection, which would require a vet's treatment to resolve. Can you post a pic? Is it a solid color or does it look like pink streaks?

Thanks for the reply...The turtle felt slimy all over. It has to be either a fungus or a bacteria. As stated above I bathed her in a mild betadine and water solution then rinsed. I then left her in a dry tank for 24 hours. Now she is in a proper tank with warm water and a basking site.
Bathing her removed alot of it...drying helped her skin return to a normal feel. Now since she is back in water it seems to be fading.
It was not fuzzy. It was as though someone had put her in pink easter egg die. The grooves of her shell had pink in them and all her skin was pink. You could still see her markings but with a pink coating. I spoke with my vet who agreed that is is possibly a bacteria. Since she was kept in a cold tank we assume it is a cold thriving bacteria. What ever it is it seems to be going away and she is acting like a normal slider. She has not seen a basking spot for a while but she is figuring it out. Thanks for the post although I think we are making progress. Weirdest stuff I've ever seen on a turtle.

I'm glad you talked to a vet! Good luck with your girl, keep us posted on her progress!
