Crested wont eat anything but crickets

youngherplover Mar 04, 2008 11:09 PM

I just got my first crested from an expo on saturday. Since I've had "him" he has not shown any intrest in the baby food at all. I'm using baby food for right now because that's what he was raised on by the people I bought him from. Eventually I hope to switch to CGD, but that'll never happen if he won't eat the baby food.

What is the best way to get him to eat it?

I tried putting some on his nose and he licks it off but it makes him mad and he runs away and hides before I can put any more on.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

People have reported good success with dusting the crickets with CGD. Helps them develop a taste for it.

Also are you leaving the food out for a while? I know many cresties like their food "aged" and won't necessarily eat it the first night. Obviously, watch for signs of mold and the like, but there is some thought this is a throw back to them eating fallen fruit. I know my girl when she was younger wouldn't eat her CGD until is was fruit leather consistency the next night, now she'll eat it fresher, but sometimes still likes it sticky.

I have tried leaving it out, right now it's been out for three nights. He still hasn't eaten it on his own though. I do stir it a bit to keep it from hardening.

I'll try the cricket dusting thing, thanks!

How do breeders get their hatchlings to start eating CGD? Do geckos just have a taste for it?

they eat it on their own, there's no trick to it. they know it's food and when not given a choice of anything else, they can't afford to be picky.
