Permit for Rear Fanged in Florida???

FL_Herps Mar 10, 2008 06:41 PM

I am having a hard time figuring out the permit requirements for rear fanged in Florida. The Florida Fish and Wildlife website is very vague about permits for such animals.

Does anyone know for sure if the state requires a Class III permit for rear fanged like Boiga, Hydrodynastes, etc...or do you need the same permit as you would for a front fanged snake (a Class I permit)? (Or do you not need one at all?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is an extremely difficult question, and I have never found anyone at FL Fish & Game that can give you a straight answer. Reputable dealers in Florida will generally not sell you a Boomslang or Twig Snake without a Class 1 permit, however they will generally sell you just about any other rear fanged snake without any state documentation. I have heard of people not being able to purchase anything in the Boiga family from some dealers without a Class 1, but other dealers will sell them without a problem. If you can find an absolute answer to this question, or a list of species please let me know.

You can have *certain* rear fangs but others you need permits for. You can have FWC's, vines and stuff like that but anything else you need a permit for. You can't have boiga, you need a permit. Anything that can do some nice damage you will need a permit for.
