Very beautiful! Keep us posted if she breeds... I'd love to see those hatchlings. :D

I'll post an old picture of Lizzie... Still hoping to find her, but at least I've learned to make certain I have a secure lid and that I don't leave it off for any length of time. Not sure exactly how she got out, but I'll cover all bases with the future snakes.

Too bad you lost that snake, Holly. I remember when Mike F. was selling it. It had a nice aberrant pattern. I've lost some kings that really meant a lot to me also. I'm sure you'll find another lavender that you'll just go crazy over some day.

Hollychan Mar 12, 2008 09:15 PM

I still have hopes that she'll turn up. I miss her like crazy. The inverted-top soda bottle suggestion is now being used in my closet. I've got to get some more bottles so that I can set a couple more around the house, and maybe, just maybe, check the attic in case she managed to squirm her way up there. I still have hopes. It's entirely possible that she managed to get outside, but as cold as it was shortly after she escaped, I don't think she would have left the house immediately.

There's always hope. Hope that she didn't dehydrate, hope that she's located some anoles in the house or a bug or two and managed to feed a little, hope that maybe she did go into brumation and she'll emerge soon, since the house is warming back up a lot.

RossCA Mar 12, 2008 09:24 PM

Love the pattern on that king. It looks a little like the partially aberrant desert striped Cal king I bought last year.

Hollychan Mar 25, 2008 08:11 PM

Morse... that snake should be named "Morse".... ^_^

Great looking kings, Steve. I especially like those aberrants!

RossCA Mar 12, 2008 03:28 PM

It's too bad this forum gets little play, Cal kings are my favorite snakes. Nice pictures guys! Here's a banded hypermelanistic Cal king from L.A. Co. These are always cool to find because they represent a very small percentage of the population.

RossCA Mar 12, 2008 04:05 PM

In 2005 I found a Cal king on Whitewater Rd. that was very light for the area. This snake was a juvenile at the time of the photo and shouldn't even be this light as an adult from the area. A few years before, me and some friends found a 54" king from the same area that was still a lot darker than this king. I won't consider it hypo until I prove it out, but until then I'm calling it a possible hypo. In person the snake seems to have a slight transparent look in the brown.

RossCA Mar 12, 2008 04:19 PM

Last year the drought was so bad in the areas I usually look for kings (L.A. & Riverside) that I was forced to try an area that received more moisture, San Diego. I've found striped kings in riverside but never in S.D. My goal was to find my first S.D. striped king. I lucked out by finding it on my first trip to the area.

The box he was found under.

As found.

In hand for size comparison.

Striped kings are common in S.D. but because it was my first time hunting the area, I felt like I had found a Newport phase! I returned to the spot later and found a nice looking banded juvenile. There are some nice looking kings down that way.

RossCA Mar 12, 2008 04:28 PM

Here's an L.A. Co. Newport phase.

STEVES_KIKI Mar 12, 2008 04:32 PM

Thanks Steve, I feel lucky to live here. A lot of herpers that live in this are are more into other kinds of snakes, and don't seek out the awesome Cal kings. They truly don't know what they're missing. lol

Those are some awesome cal kings!! I also like the Grease King Pics in the previous post. I miss Cali!! Dave

is that its a hypo. I know what you mean about how the brown looks different.

RossCA Mar 13, 2008 01:44 AM

Yeah, every time I take him out of his cage he seems to have that look to him. Maybe it's just my imagination. lol Here's a close up.

zach_whitman Mar 13, 2008 04:09 PM

Yeah, even the lightest coastals have more of a dark hue to the brown.

snakesdjf Mar 12, 2008 07:54 PM

Awesome is that a "Grease King"Cal King phase? Very cool snake and great pics!! Dave

RossCA Mar 12, 2008 08:34 PM

Yes, Grease king is another name that has been used to describe them. Thanks.

snakesdjf Mar 12, 2008 08:02 PM

Hello Ross I was just curious if many of the Washboard phase or granite phase high speckled cal kings have been found in SD. Are they as rare as people say they are? Dave

RossCA Mar 12, 2008 08:44 PM

Hi Dave, the morph your talking about is actually found up north. I think they are considered a type of hypo and are not very common as you mentioned. S.D. has hypo's but they look different. The original blue eyed blond hypo morph was collected in S.D. Co. There's also an extremely light phase from S.D. Co. that looks hypo, but many consider the light color a part of the variation out there. You can find Cal kings with all sorts of shades of brown. Here's the real light phase I was talking about.

Hollychan Mar 12, 2008 09:17 PM

That snake is beautiful. I see stripes of vanilla in that chocolate pudding. :D

RossCA Mar 18, 2008 06:47 PM

Hey Reako45, Did you find that king in those hills that are north and west of Chatsworth? It looks more like a desert phase than a coastal. Your Malibu king is pure coastal. It's hard to tell from your picture, but is it more less in between a coastal and desert phase? Cool snakes!

reako45 Mar 18, 2008 07:26 PM

Ross, I sent you a pm about where he's from.

reako45

RossCA Mar 18, 2008 08:15 PM

Thanks man. It just goes to show the name "coastal" has nothing to do with the habitat type that phase prefers to live in. Just like the fact you can find black and white kings in northern Ca far away from any desert. Kingsnakes tend to be kind of rare in the type of habitat you showed me. I started off herping in similar habitat in Riverside and never found more than 3 a year in those spots. One year I set up a board line near the coast. The first time I flipped 4 kings there was a surprise to me. Now it's expected. lol And even when setting up boardlines near the coast, some spots are better than others. It even comes down to different soil types and types of vegetation they're set up in. Grassy areas are real nice. If I get some free time, I'll have to shoot up there. Maybe not because I have a bunch of new spots I really want to hit this spring. They'll probably take up a lot of my free time. There's always road cruising in the high desert though. If you pay for "all" the gas I'll be willing to take you along. LOL j/k Talk to you later.
