Question regarding shedding

caveatemptor Mar 14, 2008 08:01 PM

Hey, I read the previous post about the baby frillies and their shedding problem.

I am first time hobbyist when it comes to these guys so I am still trying to understand them completely. Don't get me wrong; I did a lot of research before I obtained my guy.

Here's where I am at:
Currently, he is having problems shedding. Right now, it is at the point where it seems stuck to his skin. It's almost as if its glued on there. Now, I did not find any information about that, so I am going to consider it abnormal. I have not thought too much about it until now because tonight bumps on his skin appeared. I soaked him in a warm water bath for 15 minutes and then tried to peal some of the shedding skin off of him. I also tried to see what the bumps were and it seems as if its just the dead skin since that pealed away as well. I would have done his entire body, but the skin does not seem to want to give. I am worried about fungal infections at this point if the skin stays since that seems as if it would create a moist environment between the dead skin and his. I try to keep the humidity up, but this is where I have my second problem.
Every time I make an attempt to keep the humidity, it seems to drop to zero by the next day. I mist the tank 2-3 times a day. I have him in one of those fancy exoterra tanks (he has enough room) using the substrate that starts as a block then expands with water (cannot remember the name of it) with a light layer of terrarium moss. But despite that, the humidity always drops. So, any suggestions as to how to keep that up there?
Thanks for your suggestions!

about raising the humidity level , you can do the followings:try to close at least two thirds of the screen top, if there is a screen top, to reduce evaporation between mistings. put a larger shallow water dish, and put this water dish on the top of a heat device, like a heat cable or a heat rock. Since I did this my situation improve and my babies look better. of course keep misting 3 times a day! good luck

Yea, I use the expandable substrate too. Usually when you first put it in there it stays moist bust after a few days it dries up. I usually take a few cups of water to rehydrate it every other day or so. That usually works for me.

Hello. I am as well having the same problem with my Frilled Dragon, Kiba, as you are with yours. Only, she's only had one dead skin bump... I managed to get that off from her skin a while ago.. but now it looks like her skin is tightening around the area.

I'm quite worried about her, and I'm afraid she has an infection. I have not tried giving her a warm bath yet, but with nothing else important, and all the care i have for her, I will as soon as I post this message.

Please, if you find out how to fix our Frillies' skin, I would be ever so greatful of you to share with me.

Thank you,
Kristen

Hey Kristen,

Just to clarify, your frilly is having problems shedding, right? That's when the bumps on mine started to appear.

As to fixing this problem, make sure your set up is perfect, i.e. humidity, lighting, etc. That's probably one of the more important factors here, but I'm sure you knew that already.

Now, onto the skin tightening: where is it doing this? I've never really heard of shed skin tightening around the body so is it around the limbs? Regardless, the warm water baths will help with that especially to get the shed skin off. Usually, I do not recommend pulling the skin off yourself unless its in extreme importance to get off; you could potentially do more harm than good.

My main concern, however, is the recurrence of the bumps. Typically, these are a sign of infection. Until you're 100% sure Kiba is back to normal, I would take the extra step with sanitizing, so wash your hands before and after and ensure that you remove any wastes as soon as possible. Also, if this problem does not seem to be clearing up on some level in 2 days, do not hesitate to take him to a reptile vet immediately with a fresh fecal sample. I don't want to be a downer, but I did lose mine because I did not react quick enough. Apparently, he had parasites despite the fact he was a cb.

I hope I've given you some helpful information. If you have any more questions, I'll see my best to answer them, or you can ever post your own topic and see what others have to say. I hope your frilly gets better.

Hey there! Thanks ever so much for the reply.

As for the conditions of the tank, I have her in a 10 gallon tank with a basking area that goes around 90-100 degrees and her cooling area at around 80-85 degrees. her humidity in there is kept at around 45-65%. She's given a stick to click to rest under the basking light, which she takes advantage of regularly.

But this shedding problem.. it seems fine EVERYWHERE else onher body, just.. it seems at though her back, right below herneck, has skin that is tightened to her.

It seems to be lifted though, being that I'm now giving her daily warm baths for 5-10 minutes, depending on her mood.

I hope the tightening lifts, it's definitely still there, but not as bad as before.
