A single crested needs at least 20 gallons, so I'd think 30 at least for a pair and 40 for a trio would be good minimum sizes; larger is never bad, and remember that they need vertical space more than horizontal space.

That's about 34 gallons, so it should be ok for a pair, but I wouldn't put a trio in there.
