Newts Breeding or Fighting?

KingOfNewts345 Mar 27, 2008 07:54 PM

Hey guys, i'm kinda new to newts. Anyway, today i fight my eastern newt wrapping its hind legs around my chinese fire belly newt. Like it was trying to breed with it. My fire belly wasn't even trying to escape from the eastern newt. Is this fighting or attempted breeding? The easterns are wildcaught, so i can release them if this is fighting. I also just caught my eastern newt today. please help........
My Pets are:
1 fire belly toad
2 fire belly newts- chinese
2 eastern newts
1 spring peeper
in a 29 gallon tank
and my gerbil in her critter cage

That's breeding posture; I've never seen newts fight, but I feel certain they don't do it by trying to amplex their opponent.

Was the eastern wrapping its legs around the Chinese newt's neck? That's the normal posture. You may also have noticed the male rubbing its snout and cheeks on the other newt; this is done to transfer pheromones.

I very much doubt you'll get any viable young from this; the eastern is just randy. I wouldn't separate them unless the other newts seem stressed.
