Filter ideas, please!

golfdiva Apr 01, 2008 09:57 PM

Once again, I am wrestling with this problem! I have a Fluval 4 right now, it's the kind that sits in the tank. My two large turtles winter in the basement in an 85 gallon kiddie pool. My Fluval can no longer keep up. I have to clean out the filter every other day because it gets clogged up.

I've looked at canister filters, but they need to be lower than the tank, and my pool sits on the floor. I've looked at filters that hang on the side of an aquarium, but they won't fit on my round sided pool!

I'm currently considering a pond filter, but they seem like such over kill!

Any ideas will be appreciated! Thanks!

Pond filters are probably the way to go in this case. Get one rated for a pond about twice the size of yours.

I agree, a pond filter sounds like it would work well. You can never really go over kill on filtration. The more the water is turned over in an hour the better when it comes to turtles.

Currently in the US Navy so I have sold off my collection. But over the years I have had dozens of turtles, fish, geckos, and other lizards. Cant wait to get back in the hobby once im out though!

So, I found online how to make one's own pond filter. Looked interesting! But the directions for the smallest filter was for a 2000 gallon pond! (That is for sure too much "overkill"! lol!) So I tried to scale it down, made the filter part out of a 5 gallon bucket. Bought the smallest sump pump I could find. It blew the cover off of the bucket! lol! What a mess! So this afternoon, I'm off to the pet store to see if I can find a smaller pump!

Wish me luck!
