Screen or glass?

d0llm0uth Apr 01, 2008 10:19 PM

Are screen cages or glass/solid cages better for frilled dragons? I see people are using a mixture of both. The reptile room never gets below 75 degrees, even during the night, and is usually around 80 during the day. I was thinking of just using a reptarium, since I have several empty ones of many sizes here already--but if it is better not to use screen I can always make something different.

Thanks!

glass would hold humidity better. but i like screen.

my frilled is just a baby, so i've got him in a 40g tank right now, but eventually, i was going to get something that's probably wood on the sides and back, and screen in the front.

that way it holds humidity, and has better airflow and junk with the screen.

and looks better :]

just my opinion

I think which is better depends upon the environment that the cage is in. If the cage is indoors, than I agree that glass terrarium will hold humidity better and may be easier to deal with for lighting requirements. This might make it a better choice.

The idea of a custom terrarium, suggested in the previous post may be a good way to go.

If your lizard is in more of an outdoor arrangement than an all glass terrarium could dangerously over heat.

I happen to live in a humid, subtropic area in terms of weather. Majority of the time, I use an outdoor reptarium situated in a larger screen patio area. He gets a mixture of sun, shade, air and I keep careful watch on the humidity. I bring my lizard indoors if the temperature and weather aren't good.

Hope this is helps

But do you have trouble with them rubbing their snout against the screen causing nose damage

I know that some owners do. The screen for the "reptarium" brand by apogee is softer than the screen you find at your local home depot/lowes etc.

I decorate the cage with plants/vines to make him feel more secure so that he does rub his nose. So far, his nose is okay, if it becomes a problem i will change my set up.

i meant so that he does "not" rub his nose

I dont like screen. I have had babies and adults in them an eventually they get blisters, or nose rub from the screen. Especially the babies who just run around wrecklessly. Reptariums arent that bad because of the material. But otherwise I never use screen anymore at all. When i put animals outside I use a converted cage thing that used to be for cats or something. I dont sun babies. Hpe this helps.
