White's with a cloudy eye - suggestions?

jabaspoon Apr 04, 2008 10:10 PM

My daughter has a White's tree frog (Vertigo) with a cloudy eye that does not seem to go away. Sometimes it disappears for months at a time and then comes back to the same eye (it's only on one eye). His cage buddy (Kinkachu) does not seem to have the same affliction. Plus I believe that it could be affecting his appetite/ability to see crickets and mealworms.

I have seen a vet in our area and he prescribe a medicine that did not seem to work. I would rather not spend the money to get the same answer. Some Herp experts at Davidson College near us suggested this forum to seek an answer, since they didn't know much about frogs.

Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?

Thanks.

i would suggest some turtle eye drops or diluted methelyne blue ( fish meds). although, i am not sure of the dosage on that.

there is a really great and very active forum for only frogs called:

talkto.thefrog.org

they have breeders and avid collectors/enthusiasts on there that are more then willing to help out in a case like this.

good luck!

one of mine is showing the same condition. I once readed in reptiles magazine that this condition is not reversible, and it is a common disorder with captive frogs that are given to much food, with no hibernation fasting periods. in fact the cloudy eyes are storations of lipids (fat) inside the eye. no drug can help but you can try to feed less, 2 times a week are enough with adult white/ by correcting your feeding patterns you can still help those that still don"t show this problem. otherwise it will lead to poor blind frogs
