Malformed/Injured leg

childofbean Apr 08, 2008 09:51 PM

I have a baby crested gecko who is under two inches long and seems to be doing relatively well. My only concern is that his or her right front leg doesn't land correctly on the ground and has a knotted appearance. It seems to roll to the side when placed on the ground.
It also doesn't appear to be able to hop, but then again that could be just because its so small.
Is this something I should take it to the vet for, or should I just wait and see how things go for a while? I have a feeling that the damage is already done and that he/she'll just have to live with the odd leg.

Could be just a broken leg, but what it could be is much more serious: Metabolic bone disease. MBD is a progressive lack of calcium in the diet of many lizards in which the body begins to steal it from the bones. If caught early, there is a good recovery rate, but too long and it is sad and painful for the little one. Just to be sure, a vet xray will give a definitive answer and treatment. Good luck.

Thanks! I've only had it for a week or two, so it's obvious that the leg was like this before I got him/her.

Here's a picture of the little one.
MBD was a suspicion of mine because his jaw has a funny shape.

what is the geckos diet?

childofbean Apr 09, 2008 07:24 PM

a mixture of baby food and t-rex crested gecko powdered diet

Let me just add to my previous message-

I had tried feeding him crickets before with no luck, so I decided to take a break from them. I tried again tonight and the little guy actually ate them!

glad to hear it's taking a variety of food now.... I'd cut the babyfood out of the mix if it were me though.... All the babyfood is doing is diluting the nutrients of the diet.

I'm going to be harsh now, because I can't even look at the picture you posted and I'm not sure how anyone else could. From the legs, to the mouth, and even the cranial bones supporting the crests are very deformed. If this little one doesn't get a shot of calcium and quick no amount of CGD will help.

Our vets have same day appointments, I know I'm taking in a friend's today. Every day this gecko is going downhill and, as it might be too late already, sitting around talking about it isn't going to fix it.

Thank you. The gecko had this appearance when I first got it. I wasn't sure if it looked that way because it was still so young or if something else was wrong. Now that I know it isn't a normal appearance, I'm going to make an appointment with my vet right away.
