Let's play "Sex my Gecko"!

Severa Apr 11, 2008 10:30 PM

I believe it to be a she and I am on the verge of purchasing her a male for next season but I just wanted some reassurance. Ten extra points for those who know the morph!

Thanks All!

to be sure at that size, you need a photo of the underside of the legs. Males that are over 5-8 grams should be showing pre-anal pores. You're looking for the little black spots on the underside of the legs. Cresteds generally have 2 rows.

If you see pores, it's a male, if not, it's a female. It's too small to be showing a noticeable bulge if it's a male most likely.

Thank you for the clear picture of the pores and for the yellow outline! I felt like a dummy reading the rhac book because I didn't really see what they were talking about - this picture clearly shows what to look for and, oh well, I guess the one I was hoping was a she is probably a he.

it looks to be female to me. ive seen babies as young as 3 months be sexed positively. id get more opinions, but it does look female to me. if youre interested in a male for next year, i currently have a few extra males that show some awsome colors, along with amazing dalmation spots. i have two in mind that you may think look very nice, as well as an older one, which was an origonal in my colony. hes 4 years old and the father of the two younger ones in mind. im willing to move any of them if youre interested. two of the males have been boserved breeding, one of the youngert ones as recently as two nights ago.

I believe she is old enough to rely on not having to look for the pores but I have seen geckos develop bulges sooner than others @ 15 grams. Seeing the pores really is the sure fire way of knowing the sex. I need to get a loupe to look for the pores. I have tried numerous times to take a picture and blow it up on computer but I end up stressing the gecko out and end up with blurry pictures.
We still do not see the pores on her even with a magnifying glass and I am going to go with it being a girl.
Thanks for the offer Mike but I already have a little male picked out. Thats why I wanted to get reassurance that she is a she before I got him. Together, they should make some incredible Halloweeners!

Thanks All and thanks for posting the pore pic LAC!

If you have a computer scanner, they can also work wonders if you can get the gecko to sit still long enough to efficiently scan it. Haven't tried using one for pores..... but I think this will give you an idea of the quality even a printer/copier/scanner unit can produce:

HA! That is so awesome! I have a scanner and I can give that a try. Unfortunately my PC is messed up and I am on the laptop and I need to find the disk to install onto the laptop to operate the scanner. This is truly a great idea! Thanks!
