A plug for Michael's Plastic Plants

Severa Apr 14, 2008 09:24 PM

A couple posts back, I mentioned that I had picked up some plastice plants that were reptile/fish safe. I have been using them now for about 2 years in my terrariums and I have a friend that uses them in his aquarium. I could swear that the bamboo variation is the same plant but larger version sold in big pet stores. They are 32 inches long and they sell for 9.99 @ Michael's craft store but they are always on sale for 50% off. All the same, 10 bucks for them is a helluva deal compared how far 10 bucks would go for plastic plants in pet stores. Garden Collection Greenery is the brand name.

Disclaimer: I use the bamboo on the right and have yet to use the plant variation on the left. I have not had a problem with geckos trying to eat the bamboo but please be advised that the variation on the left, though tough, has much thinner/smaller leaves and may not be best for the geckos (as it would be for smaller lizards/geckos or cover for frogs) due to accidental ingestion of the plant. These are very sturdy and do not break apart nearly as easily as typical aquarium plants but I feel better noting this.

I can get the same sort of things for a $1 at Dollarama. Never had any problems with them, though the fabric does fray after several washes but its so fine and small, no risk if a few fibers get eaten somehow.

Thats a good idea, to look at a dollar store. Hadn't thought about that.

i never see anything like that at the dollar store, in fact, i haven't even seen those at michael's. thanks for the pic, maybe i'll bring it with me next time i go in to look. but they aren't silk, they're plastic right? so no fraying.

Yep, plastic. Sturdy strong stuff too. High end aquarium plastic plant quality.

I will tell you where they usually are too. You know that many retail stores have a "racetrack" meaning they have a bunch of stuff in the center of the store but there is the tile path that goes around it (usually riddled with bulkstacks or cheezy carts full of crap that you would think are "deals" but are actually overpriced stuff....and you can't even manuver a cart around it UGH!!!!). On the outside of the path are all the aisles. Anyhow, if you are following my description of the floor plan, our Michael's out here are set up like this. You enter the store and you walk into the 4 o clock position of the racetrack. In the middle of the store is all the floral stuff with the racetrack around it. These plastic plants are always around the 10-11 o clock position of the racetrack towards the back-left of the store. If Michael's share the same store set up nation wide and they are doing their plan-o-grams, thats where they would be.

Actually, here is the barcode: 017086018478
They should be able to punch that in and tell you right off hand if they have inventory.

I have bought at both a dollar store and Michael's and my experience is that the ones from Michael's are better quality and if you put them next to the dollar store ones, you get better value - especially if you use the 40 percent off coupon. Those plants are always on sale at Michael's too!

Was at Michael's last night and they had them all on an endcap in the same area as I described above.

i did find them, in a totally different area (in the center close to where you walk in). the bamboo is actually only $7.99, but i couldn't figure out how i would mount it and ended up getting a flowery stem instead =P
