Pixie Freaks, I have a question

JohnRobinson Apr 15, 2008 07:21 PM

and I mean freaks in the nicest possible way. I bought a pair of Pixie frogs at a local herp show. The dealer had about 10 of these and one was quite different from the others. Most seemed very much like normal, baby giant Pixies (adspersa) with the greens and browns and one was entirely brown and is lacking in the dorso-lateral folds commonly found on P adspersa. Does anyone know if this is just a freaky adspersa, an edulis or some other abberation? They are both newly metamorphosed and were about the size of a nickel when I got them and are now nearly double that size after just two weeks of conspicuous consumption. Does anyone have a reasonably good guess at what I have?

left is a dwarf and right is a true pixie

Yeah, the left is a dwarf, P. edulis (looks just like mine), and the right one is the giant pyxie, P. adpersus.

Thanks for the info comrades. I was hoping that I had two different species! At this point they are identical in size. It will be interesting to watch their growth. Do you think that they will stay grow at the same rate and the giant will just continue growing after the dwarf has stopped or will the dwarf grow at a slower rate? Just as a little FYI I photographed these two by putting them into a white cereal bowl. Not only did it contain them well but the white bowl seemed to light them pretty well for the photo! Might be a useful technique for the photo buffs! Thanks to you both! John

I'm not sure which one grows slower, but my guess would the dwarf pyxie that grows much slower. I know this because comapare this to the giant pyxie, my doesn't eat as much...only everyother day one nightcrawler. I've seen other people's giant pyxies that can put away several large nightcrawlers and up to 10 crickets per day.

Pyxies do grow very fast in most cases. I have one that eats about 3 dozen lobster roaches three times per week, and has nightcrawlers on the off nights. The edulis can grow quickly as well, they just stop at a smaller size, but both are known for big appeteites.
