Aspen shavings for substrate

cerwyd Apr 17, 2008 10:00 AM

As I've noticed several posts regarding substrate, I thought I would put in my two cents' worth. I've used aspen shavings for years now, and my three different species of plateds do great in them. I am VERY careful with feeding (large, broad, higher-edged dishes), in order to avoid impaction issues. But all in all, the aspen is still cheap (I buy the huge Kaytee bails), and is remarkably absorbent and naturally odor controlling.

Anyone have success with this stuff?

I realize it's more convenient and inexpensive for you the keeper, but Plateds really like to burrow, something that can't be done in aspen.
