Feeding hatchling blue spinys

Rosebuds Apr 19, 2008 09:34 PM

I recently aquired two hatchling blue spinys, and I have a question. How much do hatchling blue spinys eat per day? How much should I be feeding them?

Thanks

I offer my fence lizards crickets of the proper size every 3 days and normally they eat very well. If yours were collected from the wild they may or may not take prey right away but you still need to offer it and then remove any they do not eat. I however have never had a problem with a Sceloporus collected from the wild not taking prey at the first offering.

These are captive born, and I put 2wk crix in every day, and remove uneaten ones at night. Do they not eat every day like other lizard hatchlings? When I raised my beardies, they ate 50-100 crix a day.

Each BD took 50-100 a day? Are you sure? or did a large group of them take that much? I don't see how it can hurt offering them prey every day but my feeding schedule has never caused me a problem.

The general recommendation for baby beardies to a year is all they can eat in ten minutes three times a day plus salad, and I'd say that each could knock down 10-20 crx per feeding. As they grew, that amount would increase. They had lighter periods, but ate that way for the most part until after they were a year old. Then they need to be fed prey every day until 18 months. If you don't feed them this way, they probably won't reach maximum growth potential and could suffer from bone problems.

I'll just feed these babies every day and remove the uneaten crix at the end of the day. They weren't fed every day where they came from, and I lost 5 out of seven either before they arrived or just after.
