Storing wax worms?

Luis Apr 20, 2008 08:33 PM

Hello
Imagine many of you feed or have fed wax worms to your Fat Tailed .
If stored in refrigerator how long will they last before dieing?
I ask as saw few online places that sell them by the hundreds which is better than going to pet store for portions and cheaper for 4 times as much .

Thus I prefer to buy online and refrigerate but not sure how long they can be stored and remain alive.

Thanks

I've had them last four to six weeks in the fridge, but why would you want a quantity of waxworms? They are very fatty and not good as a staple diet for AFTs. They should only be fed as treats or for breeding/egg laying females.

I feed them to the fat Tails - My skunk geckoes and my ground skinks .Thus wanted larger quantity than pet store tiny portion

Your correct in what you stated . I do feed them weekly but mostly crickets however I do use them bit more than just treats .

Thank you very much for reply. 4 to 6 weeks is more or less time I was looking for.

I feed mine on a regular basis as well even more perhaps than you lol. I feed my fat tails mealies, crickets, and waxworms daily. I feed about 5 mealies or crickets and then one waxworm. They seem to like it that way, and the speed in which they gain weight is a plus.

They aren't suffering and I'm planning on breeding them in the next couple weeks.

I keep mine in a plastic container on cricket food and cricket gel, they last a couple weeks. They are also gut loaded so they provide a bit of nutrition. I'm sure you could keep them in the fridge for at least a month, easily.
