traps that catch snakes unharmed?

TwoSnakes Apr 24, 2008 04:11 AM

Hi
I have a snake in yard think its a black racer he/she is usually found by my pond .
by the time I am within 10 feet of pond it takes off through fence .
I wanted to catch it to take some pics . Dont want a glue trap or anything that could harm it or any other snake .

Anyone have any ideas ? Someone suggested taking large plastic bucket or small storage bin with lid put grass, sticks inside with make small opening in lid (ofcourse bucket laid on side) snake will crawl in and stay in.

I cant fathom snake just staying in but will give it a shot unless someone has tried better trap.

Thanks

If you are photographing, the best "trap" is patience.

Find a comfy spot and have a seat, keep motions to a minimum, no smoking (snakes have great sniffers) and wait for it.

If you were to catch a black racer, it's not going to pose for you. (sorry to sound sarcastic...it's just me)

Any sort of trap poses the risk of injury, if not from the trap hardware, the animal will certainly freak out and could injure itself attempting to escape.

A decent zoom lens and a decent camera help too.

Kind regards,

Oh I forgot.... oops

Lay a scrap sheet of plywood on the ground, and leave it for a while. (mine are like permenant, 3 years running)

Flip them and check every day, you will get lots of photo ops that way.

Peace...

the wood board is a good idea going to try it only real idea as the traps I saw are glue traps no way going to use them . I feel they should be outlawed .

Waiting for it is impossible as no telling when will see it but the wood idea I like.

Thanks

Roofing tin also makes a good coverboard.

I laid a flat piece of wood but its to hot by the pond dont think a snake will rest under it this is hot Miami
However will try it for couple weeks by summer its way to hot for a snake to lay under it but its only real option

thanks

What I do is take a five gallon bucket, dig a hole big enough for it then just shove it in. I haven't caught a ton with this but I set it up towards the end of the summer. I think this would work really well in spring but that's still a ways to go.
