Live bearing slugs

antelope Apr 30, 2008 02:27 AM

Has anyone ever had a water snake or another live bearer expel slugs? I know someone who swears that a diamondback water female layed slugs. I have never seen a birth not go full term with babies in sacs but slug looking eggs? Do the unborn snakes have a more solid "shell" or lining when inside and early on? Or has anyone seen a dor that had early term babies? The guy is very credible but didn't photograph the event.

I've had many boas have slugs in thier litters, they are orange in color & are solid. I also had a albino checkered garter lay a couple slugs in one of her litters, they were yellow & mushy.

Diamondback water snakes are common here, we once picked up a real recent DOR that was bulging. We cut her open to find alot of full term babies dead @ 15 or so, and a few large yellow ovas (is that what there called?) that were all mushy.

I haven't had a watersnake throw slugs but...

this is what they can look like. I bet you've seen raodkill w/ them.

This reply is a little late, but I've seen several different pygmy rattlesnakes lay slugs and a few cottonmouths, and I think a few others. They tend to be a little more rounded rather than elongated like eggs, and yellow. Not uncommon at all.

they can and will lay slugs just like any other live bearing snakes... its just un fertilized or undeveloped young... it's not a big issue... some will have full litters of slugs if stressed during pregnancy or not fed enough or just unfertilized...
